Getting Started with Matcha

Start with the drink you want to make. Learn how preparation, ingredients and package size differ.

What this guide covers

Preparation, ingredients, labels and practical use. Check individual product instructions for specific details.

An introduction based on published sources; not an independent tasting, product ranking or delivery guarantee.

Choose a preparation before a grade name

For matcha with water, look for that preparation in the manufacturer instructions. For a latte, look for explicit milk-use guidance. A higher price or an impressive label does not by itself show that a product fits your drink.

Choose an amount you will use

Compare net weight and the manufacturer serving amount. A large package only makes sense if you expect to use it and can follow its storage instructions. Do not compare the weight of a sweetened mix directly with plain matcha.

Who this guide does not cover

This is not a ceremonial practice assessment, a taste ranking or a dietary suitability guarantee. Ask the seller about missing ingredient or allergen information.

Plain matcha powder

ITO EN Oi Ocha Matcha

30 g · one tin

The listing states 100% Japanese matcha and describes use in matcha lattes and cooking. This is powder to prepare yourself, rather than a ready-made latte mix.

A fit for: Making matcha or a latte with your own choice of milk and sweetener; starting with a 30 g package.

Choose another format if: A sweetened instant latte mix, a tea bag, or a verified premium tasting recommendation. No independent tasting was performed.

Common questions

Should my first matcha be a large bag?

Compare how much you expect to use with the maker’s storage instructions. A smaller package reduces the amount committed before you know your preference.

Does this guide promise a mild taste?

No. We have not independently tasted or measured these products. Manufacturer flavor descriptions are not our test results.
